CATL profit jumps 41% to $2.6b in Q3 2025
CATL’s Q3 net income rose 41% to 18.5 billion yuan (US$2.6 billion), in line with analyst forecasts, as the Chinese EV battery maker expanded abroad while retaining its lead in China.
Revenue increased during the quarter but missed analyst expectations.
CATL held 36.8% of global installed EV battery capacity from January to August 2025, according to SNE Research.
The company’s international strategy includes full-scale battery production in Hungary, planned to begin by early 2026, with investments from its recent Hong Kong listing supporting this expansion.
The new Hungary facility will produce multiple battery types to address changing EV demand in Europe.
CATL’s global growth faces risks from possible restrictions on Chinese technology in the US and Europe.
The company is expected to regain approvals to resume mining, which may ease concerns over long-term lithium supply.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Growth hides unknowns on CATL’s margin durability
- CATL posted a 41% profit jump while revenue grew slower. That could mean margin gains or cheaper inputs. Missing data on gross margin and average selling price per kilowatt-hour makes the picture hazy. Shipment mix and chemistry split between lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and ternary nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) also matter, so analysts cannot tell whether operations improved or lithium prices did the work. The boost could fade as lithium stabilizes 1.
- Global battery share came in at 36.8% for CATL 2. BYD kept gaining with more vehicles that use its own batteries, which helps pricing. That pressure could cap CATL’s pricing even as it adds capacity.
EU battery passport rules spur demand for compliance tools
- CATL is ramping its Hungary plant and wider Europe operations. The European Union Battery Regulation will require a digital battery passport from February 2027 34. It covers EV packs and light transport batteries for e-bikes. It also covers e-scooters and industrial batteries above 2 kilowatt-hours. Each passport must hold data on materials and carbon footprint. It must also track state of health, defined as remaining capacity versus original, and supply chain provenance 34.
- Demand starts now for software platforms, data validation, and lifecycle tools 45. European original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), importers, plus recyclers will need them. They need to pull together scattered data from opaque supply chains. Deadlines arrive in phases for carbon reporting in February 2025, due diligence in August 2027, and passport compliance 45.
