CATL breaks ground on $6b battery ecosystem in Indonesia

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL), the world’s largest maker of electric vehicle (EV) batteries, has commenced construction on a US$6 billion battery material ecosystem in Indonesia.

This project is a collaboration with state-owned Indonesia Battery Corp. and PT Aneka Tambang and is located in Karawang regency, West Java.

The planned battery cell plant is projected to have a capacity of 15 gigawatt-hours.

This capacity is expected to power between 250,000 and 300,000 EVs, according to energy and mineral resources minister Bahlil Lahadalia. The project will also include production of battery storage for solar panels.

In addition to the battery plant, the initiative will develop nickel mines, smelters, and a battery precursor factory in Halmahera, North Maluku province.

These efforts align with Indonesia’s strategy to promote downstream investments in smelting, battery production, and electric vehicle manufacturing.

The scale of this project, producing batteries for up to 300,000 vehicles annually, represents a significant leap in manufacturing capability compared to Indonesia’s total EV sales of just 7,600 units in 2022 4.
