Canva buys two startups to expand AI marketing tools

Canva has acquired Simtheory and Ortto on undisclosed terms to expand its AI and marketing tools.

Simtheory is an AI collaboration and agent management platform, while Ortto sells customer data and marketing automation software.

Chris and Mike Sharkey, who founded both startups after building Stayz, will join Canva in leadership roles across its AI and marketing technology teams.

The deals follow Canva’s recent acquisitions of Doohly and MagicBrief, as well as Cavalry and MangoAI.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Canva’s acquisitions bring AI agents and marketing software under one roof

  • Simtheory offers a secure workspace for using multiple AI models from providers including OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, without locking teams into one vendor 1, 2.
  • The product centers on AI “agents” that can plan, reason, and complete multi-step work like research and analysis by connecting to company tools and data, including internal systems and software-as-a-service tools 3, 4.
  • Ortto pairs a customer data platform (CDP), which unifies customer information, with marketing automation software for campaigns across email, text messages, and in-app messages 5, 6.
  • Ortto promotes revenue growth through personalized messages triggered by real-time customer actions, citing examples such as a 20% increase in subscriptions via automated customer journeys 7.

Canva’s move pressures rivals and could expand advanced AI to small businesses

  • The deals put Canva in more direct competition with marketing platforms like HubSpot, expanding past content creation into customer engagement software.
  • Ortto can manage customer journeys, while Simtheory adds agentic AI for handing off multi-step work, and the source materials do not say these systems “execute and optimize” Ortto campaigns autonomously 3, 6.
  • Combined, the tools could broaden Canva into a business software platform where users build campaigns while AI “agents” handle tasks such as research, drafting, and analysis 4, 3.
  • Integration could bring AI agents and marketing automation to Canva’s small-business customers, raising pressure on creative software and marketing software providers.
