Canon includes chip deals in new five-year plan
Canon is considering acquisitions in medical devices and semiconductor equipment as part of its new five-year plan.
The company, known for cameras, printers, and lithography machines, plans to invest ¥3 trillion (US$19 billion) into current operations and may set aside up to ¥2 trillion (US$12.6 billion) more for potential deals.
It also lowered its dividend payout target to about 40%, down from 50%, while expecting shareholder returns to exceed ¥1 trillion (US$ 6.3 billion) over five years and maintaining flexibility on stock buybacks.
Shares fell 0.9% after the announcement.
Canon faces challenges in its traditional camera market and capital-heavy chip tool sector, with clients such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.
