Cambodian digital bank launches nation’s first debit-credit card

Wing Bank, a digital bank in Cambodia, has launched the Mastercard One Card, the first in the country to combine debit and credit card functions in a single card.

Developed with Mastercard and Compass Plus Technologies, it features a numberless design to help reduce fraud risk.

Users can manage both functions through the Wing Bank app.

The card is available in Platinum and Gold versions, offering different credit limits and benefits such as travel insurance and airport lounge access.

Annual fees are waived in the first year and can continue to be waived with certain usage levels.

The launch comes as digital payment adoption rises in Cambodia.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Cambodia compressed decades of payment system development into less than two decades

Wing Bank’s 2-in-1 card launch represents Cambodia’s accelerated financial infrastructure development.

The country only established its National Clearing House in 2005 to facilitate basic interbank transactions, and digitalization of banking services didn’t begin until around 20091.

Yet within 15 years, Cambodia has progressed to offering sophisticated combo cards that integrate debit and credit functions with numberless security features, technology that took developed markets much longer to implement.

This timeline reflects the advantage emerging markets have in adopting next-generation financial technologies without being constrained by legacy infrastructure.

The broader context shows Cambodia’s banking sector rebuilding from scratch after the Khmer Rouge period (1975-1979), with the National Bank of Cambodia established in 19901.

2️⃣ Wing Bank’s rapid dual-network strategy signals intensifying competition for premium customers

Wing Bank launched both a Visa Infinite Credit Card in August 2024 and the Mastercard One Card in October 2024, demonstrating an aggressive push into the premium segment23.
