A coalition of 11 states, led by California, has filed a lawsuit against the federal government regarding the repeal of electric vehicle (EV) and heavy-duty truck regulations.

The lawsuit was filed on June 12, 2025 in the US District Court in Northern California.

This legal action follows President Donald Trump’s signing of resolutions that overturned California’s plans to ban the sale of gasoline-only vehicles by 2035.

The resolutions also imposed stricter emission standards for heavy-duty trucks and rescinded waivers issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that allowed California to set its own vehicle emissions standards.

The states contend that the repeal violates legal procedures and undermines states’ rights to regulate emissions.

The lawsuit names Trump, the EPA, and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin as defendants.

The plaintiff states include New York, New Jersey, Colorado, Massachusetts, and Washington.
