ByteDance’s web scraping bot faces US regulatory scrutiny

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, introduced Bytespider, a web scraping bot designed to harvest data from the internet at unprecedented speeds.

The rollout of Bytespider occurs amid significant challenges, including impending regulatory scrutiny by the United States government regarding TikTok’s operations tied to national security concerns.

Research by Kasada, a bot management specialist, indicates that Bytespider may be the most aggressive scraper currently in operation.

Bytespider reportedly achieves scraping volumes 25 times higher than OpenAI’s GPTbot and 3,000 times that of Anthropic’s ClaudeBot.

ByteDance’s scraping efforts have surged in the past six weeks, indicating a strategic push to enhance its generative AI models swiftly.

Unlike its competitors, Bytespider ignores the robots.txt protocol, which indicates data usage restrictions for scrapers.
