ByteDance’s Volcano Engine debuts coding agent at $1.3 promo price

Volcano Engine, the cloud division of ByteDance, has launched a new coding agent called Doubao-Seed-Code, priced at 9.9 yuan (US$1.3) for the first month.

The standard monthly subscription fee will rise to 40 yuan (US$5.5) after the initial promotion, which began on November 11, Singles’ Day in China.

Doubao-Seed-Code supports popular development tools such as veCLI, Cursor, and Cline, and can be used with APIs including Anthropic’s.

The model can process up to 256,000 words per query, allowing it to tackle large codebases.

Volcano Engine said Doubao-Seed-Code is now integrated into its Singapore-based coding app Trae, after ByteDance cut off access to Anthropic’s Claude models following Anthropic’s recent service restrictions that affected subsidiaries of Chinese firms.

Doubao-Seed-Code scored 78.8% on the SWE-Bench Verified benchmark, according to the company.

Chinese AI firms, including Moonshot AI and MiniMax, have recently released new models amid a surge in competition in the country’s AI developer tools sector.
