Doubao, the AI app from ByteDance, led China’s AI app market in August with 157 million monthly active users, according to QuestMobile data.

ByteDance, based in Beijing, launched Doubao in August 2023 and has seen steady user growth, with a 6.6% rise from July.

DeepSeek, a Hangzhou-based startup, saw its chatbot’s user numbers drop 4% from July to 143 million MAUs, continuing a downward trend.

QuestMobile data showed that about 40% of users who left DeepSeek in May switched to Doubao.
