ByteDance, ZTE integrate prototype phone featuring Doubao AI agent
ByteDance has partnered with Chinese telecom firm ZTE to integrate its Doubao AI agent into a new smartphone prototype, as China’s tech sector explores agentic AI in mobile devices.
The Nubia M153, released as a limited prototype, features the Doubao Mobile Assistant, which enables tasks like editing photos, comparing prices, making purchases, booking restaurants, and adding podcasts to playlists through voice commands.
The device, priced at 3,499 yuan (US$494), includes a dedicated AI button, a 6.78-inch screen, and a triple-camera system, running on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor.
ByteDance and ZTE said the phone’s software, especially the camera, is not fully complete and may lack features found in mainstream models, with updates planned every two weeks until March 2026.
ByteDance said it does not plan to manufacture its own phones and is discussing further collaborations with other device makers.
The company has previously experimented with hardware, including acquiring part of Smartisan and launching the Ola Friend wearable.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
System-level access boosts Doubao’s agent skills, but local vs cloud split is unclear
- Doubao Mobile Assistant, ByteDance’s AI helper, runs at the operating system level rather than as a standalone app 1. It can read the screen and launch other apps 2, which gives it an edge over app-only assistants. Here, agentic means AI that understands context and completes multi-step tasks across apps for you.
- The Nubia M153’s Snapdragon 8 Elite chip 3 can handle on-device inference, but ByteDance has not said if price checks across shopping platforms 3 run locally or in the cloud. That choice will shape latency, privacy, and battery life.
- Sensitive actions need manual approval 32. ByteDance prioritizes safety, which may blunt the agentic feel while lowering risk from errors.
- The device is a limited-run engineering prototype with a technical preview 32. Officials plan steady updates before broader work with more manufacturers.
Developers can tap voice commerce via Doubao and other AI phone assistants
- Doubao compares prices and places orders across shopping apps 3. Providers in food delivery, transport and entertainment can offer agent actions for bookings similar to its ticket plus restaurant flows 1.
- Developers should check ByteDance’s partner program or SDK and API docs for submission rules, revenue shares, and voice-first UX guidance.
- The hardware + subscription pattern in AI phones 3 may push plugin makers to negotiate placement fees or splits with handset brands and ByteDance, creating a three-sided market.
