🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Mobile Legends has mixed momentum and rising US competition since ByteDance’s 2021 deal
- ByteDance bought Moonton in 2021 at about $4 billion. In Q4 2024, Mobile Legends hit $1.1M peak weekly US revenue 1, while Wild Rift reached $544K 1. The title has earned $307M in Southeast Asia since launch and led Asia outside China in 2020 2.
- Average revenue per download sits at $1.80 2, with 68% of spend on Google Play 2. Valuations fell after the pandemic. ByteDance cut jobs while winding down Nuverse, its gaming brand. A sale would mean the team sees a plateau over near-term upside.
If Savvy acquires Moonton, immediate opportunities emerge for gaming infrastructure and localization providers in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA)
- It can apply the 3 expansion plan to grow Mobile Legends in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) 3. Egypt can follow through localization (adapting language and content) with a regional developer footprint 3. Arabic language providers, regional payment systems, and Content Delivery Network (CDN) firms for low-latency play should reach Savvy procurement now.
- Savvy opened Mirai in Riyadh 3. It works with Side (a voiceover and localization provider) 45 plus Territory Studio (a creative firm focused on motion design) 45. These moves create demand for quality assurance (QA) testing, cinematics, user interface/user experience (UI/UX) design, and esports production. Time outreach for Q4 2025, when new facilities go live 45. Offer talent training and community engagement that meet Saudi Vision 2030 mandates 4.
