ByteDance is in advanced negotiations to sell its gaming studio Shanghai Moonton Technology to Saudi Arabia’s Savvy Games Group in a deal valued between US$6 billion and US$7 billion, according to sources.

The transaction could be finalized as soon as this quarter. The sale marks ByteDance’s potential exit from its gaming business, which it began restructuring in 2023.

ByteDance acquired Moonton in 2021 through its gaming unit Nuverse for approximately US$4 billion.

  • The group often funds deals through Scopely, its autonomous operating company, including the $3.5 billion purchase of Niantic’s games business 3.
  • Buying Moonton would move Saudi Arabia closer to its 2030 goal of becoming a global gaming and esports hub, with Savvy (a PIF portfolio company) framed as the sector’s “National Champion” 4.
