ByteDance overseas revenue jumps, profit hit by AI costs

ByteDance’s overseas revenue rose nearly 50% in 2025, while its net profit fell by more than 70% as higher AI spending weighed on earnings.

International business made up more than 30% of revenue in 2025, up from about 25% in 2024 and the highest share on record.

Much of the overseas growth came from ecommerce, with TikTok Shop sales rising nearly 70% year on year, while ByteDance increased AI-related spending in the second half.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

ByteDance is treating AI spending as a multi-year plan

  • Lower profit lines up with heavier AI spending, though ByteDance has not called it a deliberate long-range plan 1.
  • ByteDance set aside about US$20 billion in 2025 capital spending, with most of that aimed at AI 1.
  • Early 2026 plans reserve 160 billion yuan, or US$22.7 billion, for AI infrastructure spending 2.
  • That level of investment puts ByteDance in the global race for AI capacity. Goldman Sachs Research expects AI spending by hyperscalers, the largest cloud and internet companies, to top US$500 billion in 2026 3.

ByteDance’s push could sharpen rivalry in ecommerce and AI

  • Heavier bets on AI and online retail may encourage rivals such as Meta and Google to keep spending despite pressure on profits [summary].
  • That approach adds pressure across big tech as investors question whether record spending will produce enough new revenue 3.
  • TikTok Shop’s fast growth overseas also fits China’s broader industrial policy, which includes subsidies and 165 cross-border ecommerce comprehensive pilot zones, government-designated areas that support international online trade 4.
  • That backing puts more heat on Western players such as Amazon and may invite closer scrutiny on data privacy and fair competition 4.
