ByteDance leads Chinese consumer AI market: report

ByteDance’s Doubao app remained the most popular consumer AI app in China in December, according to a report by QuestMobile.

Doubao, which functions similarly to ChatGPT, reached 155 million weekly active users in the second week of December, almost double DeepSeek’s 81.6 million users, which ranked second.

Tencent’s Yuanbao, Ant Group’s Ant A-Fu, and Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen followed as the third, fourth, and fifth most used consumer AI apps.

ByteDance, Tencent, Ant Group, and Alibaba are all major Chinese tech firms with significant user bases and AI investments.

QuestMobile said that between July and November, Chinese companies launched about 409 AI models and over 200 AI apps.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

doubao’s pricing advantage may not translate to sustainable profits

  • Low prices for Pro‑32k (a long‑context model variant) are 0.0008 RMB per thousand input tokens and 0.002 RMB per thousand output tokens. Volcengine, ByteDance’s cloud and AI services platform, says this is up to 99% below industry pricing. A token is a text chunk used for billing.
  • Public materials omit paying subscriber conversion and ad revenue, so high usage may not yield steady cash flow.
  • “AI Savings Plan” offers enterprises up to 47% off pay as you go models 1, which signals a focus on share over near term profit.
  • Investors lack visibility into pricing power (ability to raise prices without losing customers), paying user penetration (share of users who pay), or unit economics (revenue and cost per customer or transaction). That gap makes it hard to tell if usage leadership signals real advantage or growth pushed by subsidies.

third party developers can use doubao’s api infrastructure

  • ByteDance launched the Douyin Assistant API on Volc Ark for chat and search 1 (Douyin is ByteDance’s short‑video app in China).
  • The platform supports flexible methods and pay as you go pricing with token based charges, which lowers barriers for startups 23.
  • Throughput caps reach 10,000 requests per minute and 800,000 tokens per minute, so teams can scale apps without extra infrastructure 4.
  • B2B software teams can compare Doubao’s API pricing with Qwen‑Turbo, an Alibaba Cloud model tier optimized for speed and cost, to judge unit economics for customer acquisition 2.
