ByteDance to get 1 of 7 board seats for TikTok’s US operations
ByteDance will have one of seven board seats in a new entity managing TikTok’s United States operations, while Americans will fill the remaining seats, according to a senior White House official.
President Donald Trump is seeking to prevent a ban on TikTok, which has 170 million US users, after a 2024 law mandated its sale by January 2025 unless ByteDance divests its US assets.
Trump has delayed enforcement of the law until mid-December.
The official said TikTok’s algorithm for US users will be rebuilt and operated in the US, outside ByteDance’s control, and all American user data will be stored on Oracle’s US-based cloud infrastructure.
ByteDance would hold less than 20% of the joint venture overseeing TikTok’s US business, with the majority owned by American investors.
The deal’s final structure, and whether it meets Congress’ requirement for full divestiture, remains unclear.
US lawmakers have requested more details on how the arrangement would address national security concerns.
