ByteDance data center project expands in Brazil
Omnia, the data center unit of Patria Investments, signed a US$2 billion 20-year power deal on May 18 with generator Casa dos Ventos.
The agreement will supply electricity to a TikTok-owner ByteDance data center under construction at the Pecem port complex in Ceara, Brazil.
Construction began in January, and the project is expected to start operations in the third quarter of 2027.
The development is planned to expand through 2029, with estimated investment of 200 billion reais, or about US$39.9 billion.
The electricity will come from two wind farms in Piaui under a structure that gives Omnia an undisclosed stake in Casa dos Ventos’ assets.
Environmental groups have raised concerns about water use and impacts on nearby Indigenous communities.
The project is fully licensed and will use water equivalent to up to 50 households, said Omnia CEO Rodrigo Abreu.

- Omnia’s CEO puts typical equipment spending at US$3 to US$5 for each US$1 invested in physical data center infrastructure 1.
Brazil project ties politics to renewable power for data centers
- ByteDance faces a possible US ban unless it sells TikTok’s US operations, and the Brazil project would expand its presence in the Western Hemisphere 3.
- The investment adds to Brazil-China business ties as Brazil’s president tries to balance relations with the US and China, the country’s two largest trading partners 4.
- Casa dos Ventos, Omnia’s renewable energy partner, will supply wind power for the Pecém project 2.
- That setup could guide large AI facilities in other markets with abundant renewable energy 5.
