ByteDance considers major data investment in Brazil: sources

ByteDance, the Chinese owner of TikTok, is considering a major investment in a data center in Brazil, three people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The company is reportedly in talks with Casa dos Ventos to develop the facility in the Pecem port complex in Ceara state.

Initial plans involve a 300-megawatt (MW) facility, with potential expansion to 900 MW in the future.

Pecem is an attractive site due to its proximity to submarine cable landing stations and available renewable power.

However, challenges remain, as the national grid operator previously denied a grid connection request for a data center project in Pecem, citing stability concerns.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Brazil’s renewable advantage creates a competitive edge in the global data center race

ByteDance’s interest in Brazil aligns with the country’s strategic advantages for sustainable data centers.

Brazil’s electricity matrix is predominantly renewable, with 84% coming from clean sources in 2023, making it particularly attractive for energy-intensive operations like AI and cloud computing 1.

This renewable foundation helps explain why Brazil’s data center market has grown significantly, now boasting 162 operational facilities as of 2023 2.

The concentration of renewable power generation near Pecem specifically makes it an ideal location, combining submarine cable connectivity with sustainable energy sources.

This competitive edge has already attracted significant previous investments, including Digital Realty’s $1.8 billion acquisition of Ascenty, demonstrating the market’s perceived long-term value 3.

Brazil’s projected data center investments of BRL60 billion (approximately $12 billion) by 2030 suggest ByteDance is entering a rapidly expanding ecosystem rather than pioneering a new frontier 2.

2️⃣ Grid infrastructure challenges complicate Brazil’s data center ambitions

ByteDance’s potential 900MW facility represents a massive power requirement that highlights existing infrastructure tensions.
