ByteDance closes its book publishing arm

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is closing its book publishing arm, 8th Note Press, as reported by The Bookseller.

The publishing venture, launched in 2023, aimed to use TikTok’s #BookTok community.

This community has significantly influenced book sales.

However, the company’s operations are now ceasing.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Social media influence doesn’t guarantee publishing success

ByteDance’s rapid retreat from publishing demonstrates that driving book sales as a platform is fundamentally different from succeeding as a publisher.

Despite #BookTok accumulating a staggering 370 billion views and significantly influencing the publishing industry 1, ByteDance couldn’t translate this promotional power into a successful publishing operation with 8th Note Press.

The publishing imprint acquired rights to over 30 novels but struggled to gain meaningful traction in the market despite its direct connection to the very platform driving modern book discovery 2.

This example highlights how content amplification and content creation require fundamentally different competencies, even when they exist within the same company.

2️⃣ Tech companies often underestimate industry-specific expertise

ByteDance’s publishing failure reveals how tech companies frequently misjudge the specialized knowledge required in established industries they enter.

Authors reported feeling unsupported by 8th Note Press and expressed frustration about poor communication regarding the imprint’s status 3, suggesting ByteDance underestimated the relationship-driven nature of author management in publishing.

The closure comes despite the continued success of #BookTok itself, indicating that ByteDance couldn’t bridge the gap between understanding what makes books popular on their platform and actually operating a successful publishing business 4.

Industry-specific challenges in publishing—including editing, distribution, marketing beyond social media, and managing author relationships—require different skills than operating a social media platform, regardless of how influential that platform is for book discovery.
