ByteDance said to be building MR glasses

ByteDance is reportedly developing its own mixed reality (MR) glasses, signaling a potential new direction after scaling back its wider metaverse ambitions, according to a report from Sina Tech, a major Chinese tech news outlet.

This development appears to be part of ByteDance’s strategy to expand its hardware offerings into immersive technologies. In 2021, the TikTok parent company acquired Pico, a VR headset manufacturer positioned to compete directly with Meta’s Quest devices.

However, the company has since downsized these efforts. Amid reports of weak sales and a cooling market, ByteDance conducted significant layoffs at Pico earlier this year and was said to have canceled hardware plans.

The report claims ByteDance is now working on a lightweight MR device that resembles a pair of goggles. This would place it in direct competition with a similar goggle-like device Meta is reportedly planning for a 2027 release.

ByteDance has not responded to requests for comment.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ ByteDance’s evolution from content algorithms to potential hardware expansion

ByteDance’s reported move into mixed reality glasses represents a significant strategic evolution for a company that built its empire primarily on content algorithms and software platforms.

Founded in 2012, ByteDance first gained traction with content recommendation app Toutiao before achieving global success with TikTok/Douyin, which reached 500 million active users by 2019 and became the most downloaded app for five consecutive quarters in 2018 1.

The company’s $300 billion valuation as of 2024 2 provides substantial resources to fund ambitious hardware development, especially when competing against established players like Meta, who are pursuing similar mixed reality strategies.

This potential hardware expansion aligns with trends among other Chinese tech giants, with ByteDance likely leveraging its extensive understanding of user behavior from its existing platforms to inform product design decisions.

If confirmed, this move would mark ByteDance’s most significant hardware initiative to date, potentially allowing the company to create a more integrated ecosystem beyond its content platforms.

2️⃣ The strategic importance of ByteDance’s algorithm expertise in mixed reality

ByteDance’s core competitive advantage has always been its sophisticated recommendation algorithms, which could provide a significant edge in the mixed reality space.

TikTok’s “For You” page has demonstrated the company’s proficiency in understanding user preferences, making it the social network with the highest average session duration 1 by delivering precisely tailored content.

This algorithmic expertise could translate powerfully to mixed reality, where personalized experiences and content discovery are crucial but still underdeveloped compared to smartphone interfaces.
