ByteDance, Alibaba eye Nvidia H200 AI chips: sources
ByteDance and Alibaba have approached Nvidia about purchasing its H200 AI chip after US President Donald Trump approved its export to China, according to sources cited by Reuters.
Both companies are interested in placing significant orders if permitted by Beijing, but remain uncertain about supply and are waiting for further information from Nvidia.
The H200 is nearly 6x more powerful than the H20, which was previously the most advanced AI chip legally available in China.
China’s government has not yet issued a formal response to the export approval, and may review purchase requests from local companies.
Currently, only limited quantities of the H200 are being produced, as Nvidia is prioritizing its newer Blackwell and Rubin lines.
Chinese firms are particularly interested in the H200 for training AI models, a capability that domestic chips are less suited for.
Chinese authorities have recently restricted access to Nvidia chips for government-funded data centers and tech companies.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
China may approve limited H200 imports for private tech giants while barring state buyers
- Beijing is weighing a request process where buyers explain why local chips fall short 1. Selective H200 approvals could follow instead of a blanket bar.
- Regulators may block public sector H200 buys 1. Private firms like ByteDance and Alibaba could still import, while state systems keep a self reliance stance.
- The move would match earlier curbs on foreign AI chips in state funded data centers 2. That creates a two tier setup where private firms chase performance, while state projects stress political messaging.
- H200 delivers nearly six times the performance of H20, the best U.S. AI chip now sold in China 3. Huawei has no planned chip that beats it for at least two years 3. Access matters for firms that compete abroad.
Cloud providers and integrators can profit by getting early H200 allocations
- Supply looks tight, and allocations are still unclear 4. ByteDance and Alibaba await Nvidia guidance.
- If Beijing allows small imports, channel partners such as resellers and service providers that lock early lots could ride scarcity.
- System integrators are firms that build hardware for customers and set up software. Those with Nvidia original equipment manufacturer (OEM) ties can stage H200 inventory. They can bundle it with migration work for buyers moving off H20 class gear.
- President Trump said 25% of revenue from approved H200 sales to China would go to the U.S. government 3. The U.S. Department of Commerce is negotiating final terms 3.
