ByteDance aims to match Meta’s 2025 sales as TikTok grows

ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, plans to grow its revenue by 20% in 2025, aiming to reach about US$186 billion, up from US$155 billion in 2024.

This target puts ByteDance close to Meta Platforms’ expected US$187 billion revenue for the same year.

The company claims over 4 billion monthly active users across its apps, matching Meta’s user base, and has maintained steady growth despite US scrutiny and efforts to ban or force the sale of TikTok.

ByteDance’s global expansion is led by TikTok, while its domestic platform Douyin faces challenges like weaker consumption and less advertising spending in China.

TikTok is now the main contributor to ByteDance’s international revenue.

ByteDance is also gaining attention for its work in generative AI, which helps support its valuation at over US$400 billion by investors such as Fidelity Investments and T. Rowe Price Group.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Revenue parity masks significant valuation gap in social media giants

ByteDance’s projected 2025 revenue of $186 billion nearly matching Meta’s $187 billion represents a remarkable growth trajectory, yet the companies’ valuations tell a dramatically different story.

Despite comparable revenue figures, ByteDance’s valuation of approximately $250-300 billion is roughly one-fifth of Meta’s $1.4 trillion market capitalization 1.

This valuation disparity stems partly from differing business models, with ByteDance’s operating margin of 25% trailing Meta’s more profitable 38% margin 2.

The gap also reflects investor concerns about regulatory uncertainty, with ByteDance facing a January 2025 deadline to divest TikTok in the US market, where it has 170 million users 3.

ByteDance’s lower valuation multiple (1.7x revenue versus Meta’s 8.7x) highlights how market perception values predictable advertising revenue over mixed revenue streams that include social commerce 2.

This persistent valuation difference highlights the premium investors place on regulatory stability and proven profit models, despite ByteDance’s impressive revenue growth.
