ByteDance adds IP safeguards before CapCut AI rollout
ByteDance said it has bolstered its AI video model Seedance 2.0 with watermarking and IP safeguards ahead of a rollout to CapCut users in major markets amid scrutiny from Hollywood studios over alleged IP theft.
Seedance-generated clips showing well-known actors and characters spread online, fueling concerns over alleged IP theft.
ByteDance said it worked with a third-party red team and will use C2PA watermarking to help identify Seedance-made content, even if it is shared or altered off platform.
The company will also proactively monitor IP violations on the platform, using the C2PA watermarking standard.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Hollywood’s legal threats went further than “scrutiny”
- ByteDance faced legal pushback that went beyond routine oversight.
- The Motion Picture Association (MPA), a U.S. film and TV trade group, sent ByteDance a cease-and-desist letter over Seedance 2.0. It alleged the tool treated copyright infringement as a “feature, not a bug.” The Hollywood Reporter called it the first such MPA letter sent to a major generative AI company 1.
- Studios such as Netflix, Warner Bros., Disney, Paramount, and Sony also raised legal threats, according to The Hollywood Reporter 1.
- SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) condemned the tool for unauthorized use of member voices and likenesses, widening the dispute beyond copyright owners 2.
Two strategies for video tools at ByteDance and OpenAI
- ByteDance has limited the rollout to markets such as Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam, while holding back from regions like Europe 3.
- That approach supports Seedance 2.0 inside CapCut while IP safeguards develop. ByteDance said it added restrictions and watermarking to reduce misuse concerns 3.
- TechCrunch reported OpenAI may scale back video generation after shutting down its Sora app 3.
- CapCut gives ByteDance built-in distribution, which can matter as much as model strength in consumer generative video.
