Byju’s founders to sue for $2.5b in global legal fight

Byju’s founders, Byju Raveendran and Divya Gokulnath, plan to file legal claims worth at least US$2.5 billion against entities they allege have harmed their business.

The lawsuits will be filed in multiple jurisdictions, alongside ongoing proceedings in Indian courts.

They are also challenging the corporate insolvency resolution process (CIRP) against Think & Learn Pvt Ltd and disputing the standing of GLAS Trust.

These actions follow a civil contempt order issued by a US Bankruptcy Court in Delaware on July 7, 2025.

The court found Raveendran in contempt for not complying with prior orders and imposed a US$10,000 daily fine starting July 1 until compliance.

His legal team has requested a reconsideration.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Aggressive expansion amid mounting debt: the high-stakes edtech gamble

Byju’s current legal troubles reflect a broader pattern of unsustainable growth that ultimately led to its financial challenges.

The company acquired over 19 businesses for a staggering $3.63 billion during its expansion phase, creating significant financial obligations that would later prove problematic1.

Despite showing signs of financial strain, Byju’s continued high-profile spending, including a $40 million sponsorship of the 2022 FIFA World Cup shortly after raising $800 million—a decision that raised concerns among investors and analysts1.

This aggressive growth-at-all-costs approach is particularly striking when compared to the company’s current situation where, according to Divya Gokulnath, they lack sufficient funds even for proper legal representation in US courts2.

The company’s journey from a $22 billion valuation to fighting insolvency proceedings demonstrates how rapid expansion without sustainable fundamentals can quickly unravel, especially when creditors begin demanding repayment.

2️⃣ Cross-border legal complexities compound financial distress

The multi-jurisdictional legal battles facing Byju’s illustrate the complex challenges companies encounter when their financial troubles cross international boundaries.
