BYD unveils ultra-fast Blade Battery with 5-minute EV charging
BYD has unveiled its second-generation Blade Battery along with a new flash-charging system at a tech event on March 5.
The new battery technology is designed to power the next generation of BYD electric vehicles and enable charging speeds comparable to a quick stop at a petrol station.
BYD said its new Blade Battery 2.0 system charges from 10% to 70% in five minutes.
The company added that charging to nearly 100% takes about four more minutes with its 1.5 MW Flash Charging system.
The pack charges from 20% to 97% in under 12 minutes at −20°C.
It uses LFP chemistry, with estimating pack-level costs at about US$81 per kWh versus US$128 for NMC packs.
BYD said it has 4,200 Flash Charging stations in China, including earlier 1 MW chargers, and plans about 16,000 more by year end with grid-scale batteries to ease grid strain.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
How BYD’s chargers deliver megawatts without crashing the grid
- BYD’s Flash Charging system reaches high peak output by adding battery energy storage (a battery energy storage system, or BESS) inside the charging station, so the charger can deliver more power than the site pulls from the grid at that moment 1.
- A leaked nameplate lists up to 2.1 MW max output, while the input reads 380V at 896A, or about 584 kW using a three-phase calculation 1.
- Some accounts put onsite storage at about 1.5 MWh, though sourcing looks thin; the core idea stays the same, battery buffering cuts the required grid connection size 1.
- This setup can limit grid upgrade work and can shift load by charging the station battery off-peak, then discharging during busy sessions 1.
This charging speed raises the competitive stakes if it scales beyond China
- BYD says its Blade Battery 2.0 system goes from 10% to 70% in five minutes, then reaches nearly 100% about four minutes later using 1.5 MW Flash Charging [News Article].
- BYD also says the pack charges from 20% to 97% in under 12 minutes at 10C [News Article].
- Claims that Tesla adds about 277 km (172 miles) in 15 minutes come from a third-party comparison, while real-world charge rates swing with vehicle setup and conditions 2.
- BYD says it has 4,200 Flash Charging stations in China, including earlier 1 MW chargers, and targets about 16,000 more by year end with grid-scale batteries to ease grid strain [News Article].
- If BYD scales ultra-fast charging with matching vehicles, rivals may face added pressure on charger spending; rollout outside China hinges on local grid limits and site economics 1.
