Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD plans to start assembling its first vehicle in Pakistan by July or August 2026.

The initiative is designed to meet the increasing demand for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in the region.

The assembly plant, currently under construction near Karachi, is a collaboration between BYD and Mega Motor Company, a subsidiary of Hub Power.

The facility will have an initial capacity of 25,000 units per year, operating in double shifts, according to Danish Khaliq, vice president of sales and strategy at BYD Pakistan.

It will begin by assembling imported parts and some locally produced non-electric components.

Initially, the vehicles will be sold in the domestic market, with possibilities for export to right-hand drive countries, depending on freight costs and market conditions.

BYD began delivering imported electric vehicles in Pakistan in March, exceeding internal sales targets by 30%, though specific figures were not provided.

Khaliq anticipates that the market for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in Pakistan could expand three to four times in 2025, increasing from around 1,000 units in 2024.

BYD aims to capture a 30-35% share of this market segment.

The company is set to launch its Shark 6 plug-in hybrid pickup truck in Pakistan on July 25, 2025. This entry occurs in a market where competitors such as MG and Haval are already established.
