BYD restructures Europe strategy, bets on hybrids
Chinese EV maker BYD is restructuring its European operations after facing several strategic challenges.
These include a limited dealer network, lack of local market expertise, and focusing on EVs in regions that prefer hybrids.
To address this, BYD has expanded its dealer network and hired experienced executives from companies like Stellantis.
In December 2024, it announced plug-in hybrids would be central to its European strategy, a move advised by European special adviser Alfredo Altavilla.
Sales in Europe, including the UK, tripled in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year.
However, sales in Germany remain low, with fewer than 2,900 vehicles sold in 2024. BYD plans to expand its dealer network in Germany from 27 to 120 locations.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ BYD’s European pivot reflects broader EV market realities on hybrid preferences
BYD’s strategic pivot to include plug-in hybrids in Europe directly reflects broader consumer preferences that many automakers have been slow to acknowledge.
European consumer research shows only 18% of potential buyers are considering pure electric vehicles for their next purchase, while 46% favor hybrids, indicating a clear market preference 1.
This market reality is further reinforced by sales patterns, with hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) recently outselling traditional petrol vehicles for the first time in Europe, signaling a transition period that pure EV strategies might miss 2.
BYD’s correction came after special adviser Alfredo Altavilla convinced Chairman Wang Chuanfu that a pure EV approach wouldn’t work in many European countries, prompting immediate action to develop hybrid versions of all models.
The hesitancy toward pure EVs persists across Europe despite increasing model availability, with concerns about charging infrastructure, range anxiety, and purchase prices continuing to be significant barriers to adoption 3.
2️⃣ Commercial success doesn’t automatically translate to consumer vehicle markets
Despite having an established European presence since 1998 and becoming the leading electric bus supplier in Europe with over 650 buses sold, BYD struggled to transfer this success to passenger vehicles 4.
