BYD reports slowest sales growth in five years

BYD reported its slowest sales growth in five years, with sales up 7.7% in 2025 as competition intensified in China’s EV market.

December sales fell 18.3% year-on-year, marking a fourth straight monthly decline and the steepest drop in nearly two years.

Annual sales reached 4.6 million units, meeting a reduced target after projections were cut by 16% due to weaker domestic demand and pressure from rivals such as Geely and Leapmotor.

Chairman Wang Chuanfu said BYD’s technological lead has narrowed and the company plans major innovations in 2026.

Earlier price cuts on more than 20 models triggered a selloff in Chinese auto stocks, followed by slower production and delayed expansion.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

BYD delays capacity growth as production slows, margin pressure rises despite export gains

  • BYD, the Shenzhen-based automaker, hit its 4.6 million unit target 1. In the first three quarters of 2025, net income fell 7.6% while revenue rose 12.7% 2. Profits got squeezed by a price war. Q3 gross margin fell 4.3 points year over year to 17.6% 2. Broad price cuts outpaced cost savings.
  • The company slowed production and delayed expansion during rapid export growth. Domestic overcapacity and inventory buildup 3 outweighed overseas momentum. Fourth-quarter total New Energy Vehicle (NEV) sales fell 11.94% 1 even as overseas sales rose 192.49% 1.
  • BYD said its technological lead had diminished. Research and development (R&D) spending exceeded net profit by $3.28 billion 4. Chinese rivals launched low-priced models 5. BYD has a short window to turn its $30.9 billion cumulative R&D investment 4 into differentiated products before margins compress further.

Logistics and charging firms can ride BYD’s 700,000-unit overseas surge in Brazil, Belgium, and Indonesia

  • Port handlers and finished-vehicle carriers can move fast. Brazil took 77,904 units in H1 2025 6, the largest market. Belgium acted as a European distribution hub with 67,727 units 6. BYD moved extra volume to Brazil before tariff increases 6. That creates near-term demand for port work, last-mile delivery, and dealer support.
  • Charging networks should focus on battery electric vehicles (BEVs) markets. Indonesia received 20,379 BEV-only units 6, backed by tax breaks that favor pure electric over hybrids. Belgium took 38,809 BEVs 6, so charging buildouts need scale at this entry point.
  • B2B software vendors can step in. BYD now sells in 119 countries 7 and must juggle BEV and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) inventory. That adds complexity in supply chain management, dealer coordination, and after-sales service across many rules. This opens room for fleet tools, parts logistics, and dealer performance platforms built for multi-market operations.
