BYD registers as carmaker in Argentina, may build EVs
BYD has registered a local unit in Argentina as a car manufacturer, signaling a possible move to produce vehicles in the country.
The Chinese EV maker’s filing with Argentina’s Justice Ministry permits BYD Auto Argentina SAU to import, sell, manufacture, and maintain vehicles, batteries, and auto parts.
BYD, which previously invested US$100 million in an electric bus plant in Argentina in 2017, has named the country as part of its broader Latin America expansion alongside Brazil, Chile, and Mexico.
No official announcement has been made about new manufacturing plans in Argentina.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Chinese automakers are physically replacing Western manufacturing presence
BYD’s Argentina registration reflects a trend where Chinese manufacturers are taking over former Western automotive facilities across Latin America.
Great Wall Motor recently opened a new factory in the Brazilian city of Iracemapolis, while BYD acquired a former Ford facility for its Brazil operations2.
This represents more than market competition, as it involves replacing Western manufacturing infrastructure with Chinese operations.
The transformation is notable considering that Ford closed its plant in the same Brazilian region in 2021, and local officials now describe BYD’s investment as “transformative” for the area1.
This shift highlights how Chinese manufacturers are not just entering new markets but are also displacing established Western automotive presence in the region.
2️⃣ Chinese market share growth signals fundamental shift in global automotive power
The speed of Chinese expansion in Latin America reflects a broader global automotive realignment.
Chinese automakers are projected to control 30% of global car sales by 2030, up from 21% in 2024—a significant 9 percentage point gain in just six years2.
BYD’s Brazil performance exemplifies this growth, with passenger vehicle sales reaching over 76,000 units in 2024, representing a 328% increase from the previous year1.
