BYD expected to announce strong Q1 earnings, stock up 46%
BYD shares have increased by 46% year-to-date in 2025.
In contrast, Tesla’s stock has dropped over 35% due to declining sales and concerns over trade-related costs.
The Chinese EV maker is set to release its first-quarter results on April 25, 2025 which could influence its stock price.
BYD forecasts a profit of 8.5 billion yuan (US$1.1 billion) to 10 billion yuan (US$1.3 billion) for the March quarter, representing an increase of 86% to 119% year-on-year.
Sales are expected to grow by 47% to 183 billion yuan (US$25.1 billion), according to Bloomberg data.
Despite the stock price increase, its valuation is 19 times forward earnings, far lower than Tesla’s valuation of about 95 times.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Vertical integration becoming decisive in EV profitability race
BYD’s business model differs fundamentally from most automakers through aggressive vertical integration, particularly in battery production, the most expensive EV component.
This strategy is paying dividends with BYD’s profit expected to grow up to 119% year-over-year in Q1 2025, demonstrating how control of the supply chain directly impacts margins 1.
Wang Chuanfu, BYD’s founder, deliberately positioned the company to own battery technology as the cornerstone of its competitive advantage, allowing it to maintain pricing flexibility while preserving profitability 1.
The financial contrast is stark: while BYD’s sales surged 29% to $107 billion in 2024, Tesla saw its first-ever annual decline in vehicle deliveries despite reporting $97.7 billion in revenue 1.
BYD’s approach has enabled it to introduce advanced technologies like fast-charging that adds 250 miles in five minutes, surpassing Tesla’s capabilities while maintaining lower price points across its vehicle lineup 1.
2️⃣ Price segmentation emerges as critical EV market strategy
BYD’s multi-tier pricing approach, offering vehicles from $10,000 entry models to premium options, has enabled broader market penetration compared to Tesla’s higher starting price of $32,000 for the Model 3 1.
