BYD passes 17 million EVs as global sales grow
BYD, the Chinese maker of battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, said on July 10 that cumulative production of its new energy vehicles had passed 17 million.
The company said global sales in the first half of 2026 reached 1,808,511 vehicles. Overseas sales of passenger cars and pickup trucks totaled 789,367 units, up 68% from a year earlier.
Earlier industry comparisons put BYD at more than 15 million plug-in vehicles and about 20% of cumulative global plug-in sales. That put BYD ahead of Tesla’s cumulative battery-electric deliveries.
BYD’s overseas expansion continued in Southeast Asia and Europe.
In Thailand, BYD held 38.5% of new electric vehicle registrations in 2024, while Chinese brands reached 10% of car sales in Europe in December 2025.
In Europe, BYD was assigned a 17.4% European Union tariff rate on China-made battery-electric vehicles. It is also building plants in Hungary and Turkey as it expands local production.
