BYD inaugurated its 11.7 trillion rupiah (US$655 million) electric vehicle factory in Subang, West Java, on September 3, after provincial authorities resolved land, labor, and infrastructure issues at the 126-hectare site.

The factory can produce 150,000 vehicles a year.

The project had previously been described as a US$1 billion investment.

West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi said BYD had recruited nearly 9,000 workers so far, compared with an earlier estimate that the factory would need about 18,000 workers.

The Indonesian Automotive Industry Association, or GAIKINDO, said electric car sales were improving in Indonesia and that BYD’s sales had risen threefold since 2023.

West Java reported 138.1 trillion rupiah (US$7.74 billion) in realized investment and 246,887 jobs in the first half of 2026.
