BYD hits highest May sales in 2025 after big price cuts
BYD Co. reported its highest monthly sales of 2025 in May after implementing significant price cuts.
The Chinese automaker sold 382,476 vehicles, with 376,930 being passenger cars.
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 204,369 units, surpassing plug-in hybrid sales of 172,561 for the second time since early 2024.
Discounts of up to 34% were introduced in late May, leading to a 30% to 40% week-on-week increase in dealership traffic, according to Citi Research.
However, these price cuts caused a decline in BYD’s share value and affected other EV manufacturers as competitors adjusted their pricing.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Vertical integration enables BYD’s aggressive pricing strategy
BYD’s ability to slash prices by up to 34% stems directly from its comprehensive vertical integration, which provides a structural cost advantage over competitors.
The company produces batteries and semiconductors in-house, reducing component costs by 70-90% compared to what competitors pay external suppliers, with lithium carbonate costs at just $6.5/kg versus $13.5/kg in the open market 1.
This manufacturing advantage helps BYD maintain a gross margin of approximately 20% despite price cuts, outperforming Tesla’s 16% margin 2.
While competitors like XPeng have seen gross margins shrink to 7.2% in Q1 2025, BYD’s scale and self-sufficiency provide greater pricing flexibility 1.
The Seagull hatchback, now priced at just $7,780 after recent cuts, demonstrates how BYD can profitably compete at price points that would be unsustainable for less integrated manufacturers 2.
This pricing strategy has tangible results, as Citi analysts estimated dealership traffic surged 30-40% week-on-week following the discounts, driving the strong May sales figures.
2️⃣ China’s maturing EV market signals broader industry consolidation
BYD’s aggressive pricing comes amid clear signs of market saturation in China, where EV sales growth plummeted to 6.7% in 2024 from 77% in 2023 1.
