BYD has backup plan if itβs cut off from Nvidia chips
BYD has prepared alternatives if it loses access to Nvidia chips used in its EVs, according to executive vice president Stella Li.
Li said the company has not been instructed by the Chinese government to stop using Nvidia chips, but noted that BYD has contingency plans in place.
She highlighted BYDβs previous experience during the global semiconductor shortage, saying the company was able to adapt quickly due to its in-house technology.
BYD, based in China, manufactures its own vehicles and batteries and has pursued greater control over its supply chain.
Nvidiaβs automotive chips, including the Drive AGX Orin system, are used by BYD to power certain autonomous driving functions.
There is currently no sign that Chinese authorities intend to restrict the use of Nvidiaβs auto chips.
Recent reports suggest China has discouraged some local firms from buying Nvidiaβs AI chips, but these are different from the semiconductors used in vehicles.
