BYD debuts in-house chip for L3, L4 driving
BYD, the China-based electric vehicle maker, unveiled its Xuanji A3 driver-assistance chip and a central computing platform in Shenzhen.
The company said the processor was China’s first automotive-grade 4-nanometer assisted-driving chip developed in-house.
BYD said the chip is designed to support Level 3 and Level 4 autonomous driving and, in a three-chip setup, delivers more than 2,100 tera operations per second.
The company said the chip had already entered mass production.
The launch comes as China’s electric vehicle price war has squeezed growth and margins.
BYD cut prices on several lower-end models by around 30% in May, and its net profit later dropped 30% year on year to 6.4 billion yuan (US$944 million).
The launch also fits China’s regulatory plans. China released draft mandatory safety standards for higher-level autonomous driving in February 2026, with implementation proposed for July 1, 2027.
The move could help BYD cut its reliance on external chip suppliers as it expands assisted-driving features across more models.
