BYD cuts prices in Japan by 50% on weak EV demand
BYD has sold just 5,300 EVs in Japan from January 2023 to June 2025, despite opening 45 sales outlets and launching four models.
The Chinese automaker is now offering discounts of up to ¥1 million (US$6,700), pushing prices down by as much as 50% when combined with government incentives.
This aggressive pricing is unusual in Japan, where local brands like Toyota dominate, and price cuts are rare.
EVs currently make up only 3.4% of new car sales in Japan, with most consumers preferring gas-electric hybrids.
BYD sold 512 units in June, compared to 1,137 units of Nissan’s Sakura, Japan’s best-selling EV.
