BYD begins construction of EV plant in Cambodia

BYD has started building a passenger vehicle factory in Cambodia, according to a statement from the Chinese embassy.

The facility will be located in the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone and will cover 120,000 square meters.

The plant is projected to produce up to 10,000 vehicles annually, with operations expected to begin by the end of 2025.

In the first quarter of this year, the company received nearly 1,000 orders for new energy vehicles in Cambodia.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Cambodia’s rapid EV growth reflects Southeast Asia’s emerging electric revolution

BYD’s $32 million factory investment in Cambodia comes amid dramatic electric vehicle market growth in the country, where registered EVs increased by 620% in just one year—from 313 vehicles in 2023 to 2,253 in 2024 1.

This surge aligns with Cambodia’s ambitious National Policy on Electric Vehicle Development, which targets 770,000 electric vehicles on Cambodian roads by 2030 and aims for 40% of cars and urban buses to be electric by 2050 23.

The government has created a supportive regulatory environment by reducing special tax rates from 30% to 10% for pure electric vehicles and offering tax breaks for local assembly plants 2.

Cambodia’s EV growth reflects broader regional trends, with Chinese automakers expanding their presence across Southeast Asia. For example, in Thailand, NEV market share doubled from 5% to 11% in 2023 4.

2️⃣ BYD’s global manufacturing strategy prioritizes local assembly to overcome trade barriers

The Cambodian factory represents a key piece of BYD’s international expansion plan to double overseas sales to 800,000 vehicles in 2025, up from 417,204 in 2024 5.

BYD’s strategic approach involves building local assembly plants in multiple countries—including Brazil, Thailand, Hungary, and Turkey—while continuing to source key components from China 567.

This local assembly model helps the company navigate tariff challenges while maintaining cost advantages, which is particularly important as global trade tensions intensify 589.

The Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone location was specifically chosen to facilitate easier import of parts and components due to its proximity to the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, optimizing the company’s supply chain logistics 110.
