BYD aims to become world’s largest automaker in 5 years
BYD told shareholders on June 10 that it aims to become the world’s largest automaker within five years.
Chairman Wang Chuanfu said higher output of its second-generation Blade Battery is central to easing a growth bottleneck.
The comments were meant to reassure investors after a steep share-price decline.
In late May, BYD’s Hong Kong-listed shares fell after the company cut prices.
The move raised concerns about a prolonged price war in China and pressure on margins.
BYD’s exports rose 65% year on year from January to May, with Brazil, Britain, and Australia as its largest markets. But that did not offset weaker domestic performance, as total vehicle deliveries fell more than 20%.
The target remains ambitious. BYD ranked sixth globally in 2025 with 4.6 million vehicles sold. Toyota sold more than twice as many that year.
Brazil was BYD’s biggest export market in the period. However, imports are becoming harder to serve through imports as tariffs on electric vehicle kits phase back toward 35%.
