Burger King tests AI assistant to monitor customer interactions

Burger King is introducing an AI-powered platform called BK Assistant, which will listen to customer-facing interactions through headsets at hundreds of US restaurants.

The system, powered by OpenAI technology, aims to help managers understand service patterns, including the use of words like “please” and “thank you.”

A Burger King spokesperson said the tool is designed for coaching and operational support, not for tracking or evaluating individual employee performance.

Additional features include automatically removing unavailable items from digital menus, assisting with order preparation, and listening to drive-thru interactions to promote order accuracy and provide coaching insights.

The platform is currently being piloted in 500 locations and is expected to be available to all US locations by the end of 2026.

This rollout comes more than a year after McDonald’s ended its AI voice systems at drive-thrus in over 100 locations.

The announcement sparked backlash online, with some users calling the move “gross” and “peak late-stage corporate behavior.”
