Bumble’s paying users drop 8.7% to 3.8m in Q2

Bumble reported an 8.7% drop in paying users to 3.8 million for the second quarter, sending its shares down 8% in after-hours trading.

The US-based dating app operator posted a net loss of US$367 million, including US$404.9 million in non-cash impairment charges, compared to a US$37.7 million profit a year ago.

Second-quarter revenue reached US$248.2 million, slightly above the analyst estimate of US$245.1 million.

Bumble said it will introduce a new Bumble BFF app this month and roll out events aimed at building offline friendships.

The company has also appointed Kevin Cook, formerly of Cloudera, as its new chief financial officer, effective August 12.

Bumble forecasts third-quarter revenue between US$240 million and US$248 million, a range that is mostly above the average analyst estimate of US$241.4 million.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Bumble’s competitive position has deteriorated significantly since its early growth phase

Bumble’s current struggles represent a dramatic reversal from its rapid early expansion when it appeared poised to challenge Tinder’s dominance.

In 2017, Bumble generated over $100 million in revenue and had grown to 22 million users compared to Tinder’s 46 million, suggesting it was closing the competitive gap1. By September 2019, Bumble ranked second in dating app revenues with $20.2 million monthly, showing 52% year-over-year growth while market leader Tinder earned $78.4 million2.

However, the companies now operate in completely different leagues financially. Match Group, Tinder’s parent company, maintains a $8.3 billion market cap with a 15.8% profit margin, while Bumble’s market cap has shrunk to $779.9 million with a negative 54.1% profit margin3.

This widening gap suggests Bumble’s early momentum wasn’t sustainable against established competitors with deeper resources and broader app portfolios.

The company’s rejection of multiple acquisition offers from Match Group when valued at over $1 billion1 now appears to have been a costly strategic miscalculation given current market conditions.

2️⃣ Dating app market shows divergent performance, indicating company-specific rather than industry-wide challenges

While Bumble struggles with declining user numbers, other dating platforms demonstrate that growth remains possible in the sector.
