Bumble shares jump 40% after strong Q4 results
Bumble, the US dating-app operator, reported its shares jump more than 40% in early trading after it reported stronger-than-expected Q4 revenue and unveiled an AI-driven app redesign aimed at reengaging younger users.
The company said it is preparing to launch Bumble 2.0, which uses AI to enhance quick photo swipes with scrollable profiles made of short chapters about a user’s interests, lifestyle, and personality, and said it could experiment with a no-swipe experience in some markets.
Bumble posted Q4 revenue of US$224.2 million, versus analysts’ estimates of US$221.3 million. Average revenue per paying user rose 7.9% to US$22.20, and performance-marketing spend fell more than 80% year-on-year.
Jefferies analysts warned the dating category has had “multiple false starts” and said “we need to see a more sustained improvement to turn constructive.”
Raymond James analysts said near-term momentum for Bumble still depends on stabilizing paid users and proving the post-reset ecosystem can grow without heavy reliance on paid acquisition.
Bumble’s stock has tumbled more than 90% since its 2021 IPO and currently trades at about 3.55 times projected earnings for the next 12 months versus Match Group’s 11.05 times.
🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The revenue beat comes amid a planned business reset
- Total revenue fell to US$224 million in Q4 2025 from US$262 million in Q4 2024 1.
- Management said the decline came from a 2025 “quality reset”. That plan cut performance marketing (paid ads aimed at driving installs or sign-ups) by well over 80% year-on-year 1.
- The company also raised development expense to 10% of revenue in 2025 from 8% in 2024. The change suggests a move away from paid growth toward product and technology work 1.
Bumble’s AI strategy is a high-stakes bet against user skepticism
- Bumble 2.0 positions itself as a comeback effort, yet its early AI tools for profile and photo help now look like baseline features. Hinge and Tinder have offered similar options in recent years 2.
- The bigger wager centers on “b,” an AI assistant that learns a user’s values through private conversation. The goal is to act as a personal dating assistant and matchmaker 1.
- Gen Z appears less comfortable using AI for dating tasks such as drafting prompts or replying to messages. Nearly 50% of surveyed users said AI did not change much for building a profile or having conversations 3.
