Bumble Q2 outlook misses as paying users fall 21%

Bumble reported first-quarter revenue slightly above analyst estimates as the dating app company pushes an AI-enabled overhaul aimed at attracting Gen Z users.

Revenue reached US$212.4 million, while paying users fell 21.1% year on year to 3.2 million amid weaker engagement across online dating platforms.

The company said it plans to launch a rebuilt AI-powered app later in 2026, though its second-quarter revenue forecast of US$205 million to US$213 million came in below analyst expectations.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Bumble’s smaller paying base was planned, while profits got better

  • The decline in paying users came from a planned reset, as Bumble chose to focus on user quality instead of scale 1.
  • That move came with much lower costs. Selling and marketing spending fell to US$27.0 million from US$59.7 million a year earlier 2.
  • Even with lower revenue, adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) margin rose to 38.9% from 26.1%. Net earnings climbed 165.4% to US$52.6 million 2.

Bumble is trimming paid growth to lean on the product

  • Bumble cut performance marketing spend to less than half of pre-reset levels. It is betting that a better app and a stronger user mix can drive word-of-mouth growth 1.
  • That approach fits wider burnout in dating apps. A survey found 78% of American dating app users feel fatigued sometimes, often, or always. Gen Z respondents were the most likely to say they always feel exhausted 3.
  • If this works, other mature consumer app companies may spend less on paid acquisition and put more weight on retention driven by the product itself.
