Buffett picks long-time deputy Abel as successor at Berkshire

On May 3, 2025, Warren Buffett announced that he will recommend Greg Abel as his successor to lead Berkshire Hathaway by the end of the year.

Abel, 62, currently vice chairman of Berkshire’s non-insurance operations, was named as Buffett’s successor in 2021.

Buffett, 94, plans to present the decision to the company’s 11-member board, including his children, at a meeting on May 4. He will remain involved in an advisory capacity while Abel takes over operational and capital allocation decisions.

Abel, a Canadian executive with a 25-year tenure at Berkshire, assured shareholders that he would continue Buffett’s value-driven investment philosophy.

The decision on whether Abel will also become chairman is still pending.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Leadership transitions carry substantial economic risks that Berkshire has carefully mitigated

Warren Buffett’s announcement represents one of the most significant CEO successions in corporate history, with Berkshire Hathaway’s $1.2 trillion valuation at stake.

Research shows between 27% and 46% of leadership transitions fail within two years, often due to inadequate preparation and cultural misalignment1.

The financial impact of leadership changes is particularly stark: poorly managed transitions can cost companies up to 15% in lost revenue, while successful ones can increase revenues by 5% within the first two years1.

Berkshire’s approach reflects best practices by identifying Abel years in advance, giving him oversight of non-insurance operations since 2018, and establishing a clear timeline for the transition2.

The company is avoiding common pitfalls seen elsewhere, such as the 74% of U.S. leaders who report feeling unprepared for their new roles3.

Even with careful planning, research indicates Abel will likely take more than six months to reach full productivity, with developing a complete strategic vision typically requiring about eight months1.

2️⃣ Abel’s hands-on management style signals an evolution rather than revolution at Berkshire

Greg Abel’s more engaged operational approach represents a natural progression rather than a dramatic departure from Buffett’s leadership philosophy.
