Budget plans intensify AI subscription battle in South Korea
South Korean telecom companies are increasingly offering low-cost AI subscription plans amid rising competition in generative AI services.
SK Telecom is integrating major AI models, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude, into its A. (Adot) service, which has over 10 million users.
The company is exploring paid subscription options that bundle premium AI features.
LG Uplus launched a Google AI Pro add-on last month, providing access to Google’s AI tools and 2TB of cloud storage for 29,000 won (US$20) per month, with some plans offering it at no extra charge.
KT added DeepL translation services to its platform at 9,900 won per month.
Globally, tech giants are also introducing affordable AI plans; OpenAI recently launched ChatGPT Go at about US$8 (13,000 won) monthly, while Google announced its AI Plus plan at 11,000 won per month, including additional AI credits and cloud storage.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Why telcos are moving from connectivity to AI apps is still unclear
- The analysis lists what South Korean telecom operators sell, yet it skips why they are jumping into a crowded generative AI market with low-cost subscriptions.
- Readers still do not know if these products aim to keep mobile customers by adding perks to existing plans, or to build a new revenue line.
- SK Telecom is adding models from OpenAI, Google and Anthropic to its A. (Adot) service with over 10 million users, but there is no explanation for how this becomes a durable business beyond subscription add-ons.
AI competition is shifting toward distribution and away from model novelty
- Foundational AI models from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic now look more like a commodity, so the model itself matters less.
- Advantage is moving to firms with reach, including telecom operators that can package AI services into large subscriber bases.
- SK Telecom’s bundle of multiple top-tier AIs for existing customers hints that consumer AI may lean toward aggregators rather than model creators.
- Smaller AI app makers without an installed audience face a steep fight against cheap bundles from telecom operators and global tech platforms.
