US brokerage Schwab to launch bitcoin, ether trading in 2026
Charles Schwab, a US brokerage firm, said it plans to launch spot cryptocurrency trading for bitcoin and ether in the first half of 2026 through Charles Schwab Premier Bank, SSB.
The brokerage has opened a client waitlist for early access to a “Schwab Crypto” account that will support buying and selling the two cryptocurrencies.
CEO Rick Wurster previously said Schwab was working on adding cryptocurrency trading in response to client demand and to show digital assets alongside stocks, and bonds in the same account view.
Schwab already offers crypto-related products including ETFs and bitcoin futures, and reported about US$11.9 trillion in client assets in 2025.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Schwab’s crypto offering is more separated and risky than it appears
- Schwab Crypto will run through Charles Schwab Premier Bank, SSB, a banking subsidiary, and applicants must already have a Schwab brokerage account 1.
- These direct crypto positions will not have Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) coverage for certain brokerage assets if a firm fails, or Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insurance for bank deposits. Schwab flags this risk in its disclosures 1.
- Availability will start narrow. The service will not launch in every U.S. state, including New York and Louisiana 1.
- The rollout adds direct spot trading, while Schwab already offers crypto exposure through spot Bitcoin ETFs on its platform 2.
The move pressures crypto exchanges and puts digital assets deeper in mainstream finance
- The launch answers rivals like Fidelity, which already supports direct trading for bitcoin and ether. Crypto now sits on the checklist for large brokerages 2.
- Schwab’s scale could squeeze trading fees at crypto-first exchanges such as Coinbase, where simple trades can cost around 1.49% 3.
- Its $0 online commissions for stocks and ETFs set a low-cost standard that may undercut the higher-fee approach common on many crypto platforms 4.
- Adding direct crypto trading makes digital assets feel more routine for Schwab’s large client base, even as the firm frames them as speculative within a diversified portfolio 1.
