Broadcom to lend Anthropic up to $42b for AI infrastructure
Anthropic’s initial public offering filing shows Broadcom, a US semiconductor company, agreed to lend the AI startup up to US$42 billion for infrastructure.
The relationship also covers compute supply, equipment leasing, and financing.
The filing said the financing could convert into Anthropic shares.
It may fund about a third of Anthropic’s US$125.2 billion five-year lease for tensor processing unit (TPU) capacity.
Anthropic is also expected to become Broadcom’s largest compute customer in 2027.
The arrangement builds on Anthropic’s existing reliance on Google Cloud. In 2023, Anthropic selected Google Cloud as its preferred provider for training and deployment.
It later said it was expanding its use of Google Cloud TPUs and services.
Anthropic also said Google’s TPU infrastructure was co-developed with Broadcom, which co-designs and supplies the custom AI accelerators used in that platform.
In the filing, Anthropic warned that Broadcom’s dual role as hardware supplier and financing partner could create conflicts of interest that affect pricing and its access to computing infrastructure.
