Broadcom to develop Google AI chips in long-term deal

Broadcom said it signed a long-term deal with Google to develop and supply custom AI chips and other components for the company’s next-generation AI racks through 2031.

It also signed a separate agreement to give Anthropic access to about 3.5 gigawatts of computing capacity built on Google’s AI processors starting in 2027.

Financial terms were not disclosed, and Broadcom shares rose about 3% in extended trading.

The deals come as demand rises for custom AI chips such as Google’s TPUs as companies look for alternatives to Nvidia GPUs, while Anthropic said its run-rate revenue now surpasses $30 billion, up from about $9 billion at the end of 2025.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The agreement reaches beyond custom chips

  • The deal goes beyond processing units. It includes a Supply Assurance Agreement for networking plus other essential components for Google’s next-generation AI racks through up to 2031 1.
  • Broadcom serves as a development partner. It will develop and supply custom Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), Google’s in-house AI chips, for future generations of Google’s custom AI accelerators 2.

The contract ties Google to custom AI infrastructure for years

  • An agreement running through up to 2031 puts custom silicon at the center of Google’s long-term approach as companies look for alternatives to Nvidia GPUs 3.
  • Anthropic has a separate agreement to access about 3.5 gigawatts of compute capacity built on Google’s TPUs starting in 2027. That suggests the TPU setup can support large external AI customers, not only Google’s internal needs 4.
  • Broadcom shares rose about 3% in extended trading after the announcement 2.
