Broadcom CEO confirms Anthropic as $10b custom chip client
Broadcom CEO Hock Tan has identified Anthropic as the previously undisclosed customer behind a US$10 billion custom chip order revealed in September.
Anthropic also made an additional US$11 billion order in the latest quarter.
Broadcom said it is delivering entire server racks to Anthropic, marking it as the company’s fourth customer for its custom AI chips, known as XPUs.
Broadcom also secured a fifth custom chip customer with a US$1 billion order in Q4, though the identity was not disclosed.
Anthropic uses a multi-cloud, multi-chip approach, spreading workloads across Google TPUs, Amazon Trainium chips, and Nvidia GPUs, and recently gained access to up to 1 million Google TPUs through its partnership with Google.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Big XPU orders may not lift Broadcom earnings right away
- In fiscal Q3 (FQ3), Broadcom said a newly qualified fourth XPU customer placed over $10 billion in orders. The buyer is Anthropic, though Broadcom has not shared contract terms 1.
- Management warned that AI revenue will ramp unevenly with quarter to quarter swings given large deployments and a concentrated customer base. This likely spreads revenue recognition over multiple years, not in one jump 2.
- Broadcom’s semiconductor gross margins fell 220 basis points year over year, driven mainly by a higher mix of AI XPUs. That mix carries lower margins than other chip lines 1.
Chip-agnostic ML tools fit multi-platform AI plans
- Enterprises mix accelerators such as Google tensor processing units (TPUs), Amazon Web Services Trainium, and Nvidia GPUs. That raises demand for workload portability, since today’s machine learning (ML) stacks remain fragmented 3.
- OpenXLA is an open-source compiler that optimizes ML models across hardware. StableHLO (High Level Operations) is a portable set of ML operations that adds a common layer across frameworks and devices. Vendors can use it to shift ML jobs across chip types to balance cost and performance 3.
- Broadcom says more than 4,500 of its largest 10,000 customers signed up for VMware Cloud Foundation, its private cloud software. That base could channel private AI infrastructure demand 2.
- The company pegs its fiscal 2027 serviceable addressable market at $60 to $90 billion for XPUs and AI connectivity at three hyperscale customers (the largest cloud providers), with AI connectivity near 15% to 20% of dollar content 2.
