Brazilian fintech firm Ebanx expands into Asia

Brazilian cross-border payments firm Ebanx, which helps companies such as Uber and Shein offer local payment methods in emerging markets, is expanding into Thailand, Indonesia, and Turkey.

It plans to enter Malaysia and Vietnam next quarter as it pushes further into Southeast Asia.

The company opened an Asia headquarters in Singapore last month.

CPO Eduardo de Abreu will lead regional operations, though Ebanx does not offer payment services in Singapore.

Ebanx said 65% of its gross profit in 2025 came from outside Brazil, up from 32% in 2021, including 20% from markets beyond Latin America.

Chief executive Joao Del Valle said the expansion will be funded with cash on hand.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

This Asian expansion draws on a four-year-old cash cushion and a Singapore licensing step

  • Cash reserves grew after a US$430 million investment from Advent International, a private equity firm, in 2021. It ranked among Latin America’s largest pre-IPO funding rounds at the time 1.
  • That capital was first set aside for Latin American growth. Since then, Asia-Pacific merchants made up 39% of total processed volume in 2024 2.
  • Regulatory progress in Singapore supports the push. In February 2025, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), Singapore’s central bank and financial regulator, gave in-principle approval for a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license 2.
  • The Singapore office serves as a global settlement hub. The Peak said Ebanx routes global transactions through Singapore 3.

Ebanx’s move points to more South-South ecommerce

  • Ebanx is taking its emerging-markets approach into more countries. It adapts payment options to local habits 4.
  • In Brazil, the mix includes Pix, the instant payment system. Ebanx said Pix brings in 61% of revenue in Brazil among its software-as-a-service merchants that offer Pix through Ebanx 5.
  • This approach puts Ebanx in the middle of the growing “South-South” economy. It supports Asian merchants such as AliExpress, Alibaba’s international online marketplace 3.
  • It also works with XTransfer, a Chinese cross-border business payments platform, to sell across emerging markets 3.
  • Global companies often need more than standard credit cards in these markets. Examples include UPI-linked RuPay, India’s domestic card network tied to its Unified Payments Interface (UPI) 4.
  • Another option is Nequi, a Colombian digital wallet, in Colombia 4.
