Brazil may tax US tech firms’ revenue in retaliation
Brazil’s government is weighing possible responses to recent US actions, including a restriction on dividend payments to American companies.
This follows the US revocation of visas for some Brazilian Supreme Court justices amid political tensions involving former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Finance Minister Fernando Haddad has denied that dividend limits are being considered.
Other potential measures under review include ending licensing for US drug patents and taxing digital services by large tech firms, possibly based on revenue.
These actions would require President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s approval and could take effect after August 2.
The review comes after the US imposed a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods starting August 1, citing allegations against Bolsonaro.
