BMW completes first automated payment via JP Morgan’s network

BMW Group has completed its first fully automated foreign exchange transaction using JP Morgan’s Kinexys Digital Payments network.

The German carmaker executed an on-chain EUR to USD FX payment between its treasury accounts in Frankfurt and New York, with predefined conditions set by its German and US treasury teams.

The transaction, carried out using blockchain technology, allowed for automated balance checks, conditional deposits, and near real-time settlement outside of standard banking hours.

This marks the first time Kinexys, JP Morgan’s blockchain-based payment system, has processed a programmable FX payment using automated instructions.

JP Morgan has been developing blockchain-based financial infrastructure.

BMW said the technology could help streamline real-time treasury operations and cross-border payments.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The network is moving from pilot to production

  • J.P. Morgan’s Kinexys Digital Payments, a blockchain-based payments network, processes over $2 billion in daily volume and has processed over $1.5 trillion in notional value since launch 1.
  • It supports USD and EUR with average settlement under 120 seconds and runs 24/7 outside bank hours 2.
  • Siemens, Ant International, and B2C2 have completed onchain (settled directly on a blockchain) foreign exchange (FX) transactions on Kinexys 34. Siemens has used it for cross-border payments since 2021 34.
  • Payment transactions on Kinexys grew 10x year over year, which moves it past a proof of concept 1.

Treasury Management System (TMS) vendors integrating with Kinexys open near-term work for treasury teams

  • Kyriba, a treasury management software provider, serves about 3,000 corporate customers that manage over $15 trillion in payments each year 52. It integrated Kinexys Digital Payments into its treasury management system (TMS) in April 2024, which lets clients run blockchain deposit accounts inside TMS platforms 52.
  • This cuts setup work because treasurers can use blockchain payments through familiar TMS screens instead of building new systems 2.
  • Kyriba’s API with J.P. Morgan gives real-time payment status, bank balances, and intraday statements, plus blockchain features 2.
  • With programmable FX workflows live, demand is rising for specialists such as consultants and in-house treasury technology teams 2. They can build conditional payment logic, automated balance checks, and cross-border rules inside TMS platforms that connect to Kinexys 2.
